Subphonemic and cross-phonemic priming in vowel shadowing: Evidence for the involvement of exemplars in production
نویسنده
چکیده
Despite strong evidence that cognitive representations of speech targets rely upon a mapping between perceptual and motor memories, the nature of those representations—whether they are stored exclusively as abstract categories or can incorporate more detailed episodic memory—remains an open question. A primed vowel-shadowing experiment was conducted to investigate the extent to which the recent perception of subphonemic details of vowel quality can influence subsequent productions. If such effects are observed, they argue for an exemplar-based model of production in which the mapping between perceptual and articulatory representations can occur rapidly and can incorporate subphonemic detail. On experimental trials, subjects were primed with one vowel before they heard a second vowel, which they shadowed. On some trials, the formants of the prime were subtly manipulated. Significant subphonemic priming effects were observed in the F1 and F2 of responses. In addition, cross-phonemic priming tended to be dissimilatory, which may be related to an analogous phenomenon observed in studies of manual and oculomotor movement control. Accounts of these findings are discussed in the context of exemplar models of speech perception and production. r 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Phonetic imitation of Japanese vowel devoicing
Recent studies have shown that talkers implicitly imitate/accommodate the phonetic properties of recently heard speech [1, 2]. However, it has also been shown that this phonetic imitation effect is not an automatic process [3, 4]: in [3], the artificially lengthened VOT on /p/ was imitated in a non-shadowing task, while shortened VOT (which could jeopardize phonemic contrast) was not imitated, ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Transcribing on Beginning Learners’ Phonemic Perception
A large number of studies dealing with phonology have focused their attention on phonological production at the expense of phonological perception which provides the foundation stone for phonological production. This study focuses on phonological perception at phonemic level. The purpose of the study is helping beginning learners improve their perception of the English phonemes which are confus...
متن کاملProduction of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners
This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...
متن کاملAcoustic Analysis of Persian EFL Learners' Pronunciation of English Vowels
This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...
متن کاملStructural Priming Effects on EFL Production of Passive Structures
This study investigates the role structural priming plays in production of passive structures among Iranian EFL learners. In order to answer the research question, which asked whether structural priming effects result in an increase in the production of the target structure (i.e., passive structures), 60 Iranian EFL learners participated in the study. After taking the placement test, they were ...
